Port Everglades has topped its previous record for containerized cargo volume, having handled 1,076,893 TEUs in the fiscal year 2017, which ended on September 30, 2017.

According to the port, the volume represents a 4% increase compared to FY2016, and a 1.5% increase compared to FY2015, which is when the last record was set at 1,060,507 TEUs. Growth was steady throughout the year and spiked with record months in December and March.

“The volume of refrigerated produce coming into Florida through Port Everglades from Central America is significant,” said Steve Cernak, chief executive and port director of Port Everglades. “It represents more than half of all perishable cargo that arrives in Florida by ocean. “Apparel, tile and beverages also rank among our top commodities. Notably, we are seeing growth in machinery and automobile parts as the number of vehicles being shipped in and out of the port also increases.”

Operating revenue for FY2017 remained steady at US$163 million, according to Port Everglades.
