OOCL has taken delivery of and christened its sixth and last 21,413 TEU G-Class container vessel.

Named OOCL Indonesia, the 400-metre-long ship was built at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje Island, South Korea.

According to OOCL, the vessel will begin her maiden voyage this month on the Asia-North Europe Loop 1 service.

“The flexibility provided in our newbuilding programme is one of the crucial elements to how we can better manage our fleet and operations in such a dynamic and challenging industry,” said Andy Tung, chief executive of OOCL. “Not only was the time factor a challenge, but the actual engineering feat in building the world’s largest container ships for the first time within the given period while incorporating the best and latest innovation and technologies is a monumental project not to be underestimated.”

OOCL’s G-Class series of ships, consisting of OOCL Hong Kong, OOCL Germany, OOCL Japan, OOCL United Kingdom, OOCL Scandinavia and now OOCL Indonesia, was first delivered in 2017 and became the world’s largest container vessel by capacity.

OOCL’s partnership with SHI began in 1995 with the 4,960 TEU OOCL Hong Kong.
