In a statement, FedEx said under the MoU, FedEx and the GAA will collaborate to enhance the airport's operational efficiency, expedite the implementation of the new facility and expand investments.
The two sides will also promote FedEx's strategic presence and development at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
It will also play a pivotal role in Guangzhou's high-quality development, solidifying its status as an international air cargo transport hub — and facilitating regional cross-border trade.
FedEx and the GAA also held a groundbreaking ceremony for the FedEx South China Operations Center.
The logistics company noted that the facility is slated to begin operating in 2027 and aims to expand and upgrade FedEx Guangzhou Gateway, improving FedEx’s capacity and efficiency in processing import and export shipments in south China.
The facility will occupy an area of more than 41,000 square meters and will be able to sort up to 25,000 packages and documents (including import and export shipments) per hour, three times the sorting efficiency of the company’s current Guangzhou Gateway.
"We're pleased to sign this MoU and deepen our strategic cooperation with the GAA as we kick off the construction of FedEx South China Operations Center," said Eddy Chan, senior vice president of FedEx Express and president of FedEx China.
"This enhanced cooperation not only reinforces our mutual growth but also elevates Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport's position as a world-class international cargo hub. By enhancing service portfolios for our customers in Guangzhou, South China and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, FedEx can now optimize the region’s supply chain capabilities," he added.
In recent years, Guangzhou has optimized its business environment and driven the high-quality development of foreign trade by building on its strategic central location in south China.
In the first 10 months of 2023, Guangdong province recorded RMB 6.8 trillion in import and export values, which includes RMB 895.78 billion, a 3.2% increase year-on-year contributed by Guangzhou.
Guangzhou has been an indispensable gateway into China for FedEx.
FedEx said the FedEx APAC Hub, located at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, has been a major regional hub since its initiation in 2009.
The facility currently operates more than 240 international flights and 700 trucks per week, reaching over 220 countries and territories and leveraging an efficient and convenient global air-and-ground network.
