SHANGHAI PORT SAW CONTAINER VOLUME HIT NEW MONTHLY HIGH CONTAINER VOLUME IN JANUARY

Shanghai port saw its container volume reach a monthly record high in January.

 

The world's busiest container port recorded 4.35 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) of cargo for the first month of the year 

 

Last year, Shanghai port saw container throughput exceed 47 million TEUs according to Chinese state media, ranking first globally for 12 consecutive years despite the Covid-19 impact on the shipping industry.

 

Shanghai also saw a record-high growth in foreigh trade in 2021.

 

Xinhua said Shanghai registered a record import and export volume of 10.09 trillion yuan (about US$1.58 trillion) in 2021, up 15.4% year on year.

 

 

Meanwhile, the city's export volume totaled 5.74 trillion yuan (US$902.1 billion) last year, up 15.2% on a yearly basis as its import volume increased by 15.6% to reach 4.35 trillion yuan (US$683.6 billion).

 

The state media noted that the city's import and export volume in 2021 accounted for over 3.2% of the world's total.
