The Port of Oakland’s TraPac container terminal has completed a US$67 million waterfront expansion and opened its newest vessel berth.

The project, which took two years to complete, has almost doubled TraPac’s footprint, boosted its fleet of ship-to-shore cranes from four to seven, and added a third 1,400-foot-long dock for berthing mega container ships.

“We are grateful to dockworkers, truckers, carriers, cargo owners and all of our stakeholders for working with us during this buildout,” said Brian Bauer, operations vice president of TraPac. “We forecast continued cargo growth in Oakland and we are ready for it.”

Apart from the TraPac expansion, other recent significant investments at the Port of Oakland include the opening of the US$90 million Cool Port Oakland by Lineage Logistics and Dreisbach Enterprises last November and the completion of a $14 million project to heighten four cranes at Oakland International Container Terminal last June.

“It’s gratifying to see tenants investing in Oakland’s future,” said John Driscoll, maritime director of the Port of Oakland.

TraPac is the second-largest terminal at the port and handles about 15% of the containerized cargo moving through Oakland, much of it being refrigerated cargo destined for Japan.
