PORT OF GUAM MODERNIZATION UNDERWAY
November 3, 2014
Port of Guam

The last phase of a modernization programme at the Port Authority of Guam has started, with repairs to two towers, a building and upgrades to an exterior wall underway. The towers project is expected to cost some US$278,000, the building project about US$189,000 and the wall upgrades US$69,000.
The projects are part of a US$50 million modernization programme, which also includes a 4.6 acre container yard and a 3.7 acre gate complex.
The Port of Guam, the largest US deepwater port in the Western Pacific, handles more than 90 percent of the island’s total military and civilian imports and acts as a transshipment hub for the region. The modernization is partly in response to an expected US military build-up on the island as 5,000 US marines and 1,300 dependents are relocated from Okinawa, Japan.
