UPS IS ELECTRIFYING ITS CHINESE FLEET AS PART OF ITS SUSTAINABILITY PUSH
April 21, 2022

UPS announced that it is working to further electrify all its fleet in China as part of its efforts to reach its sustainability goals.

UPS said that nearly all of UPS' delivery fleet in the downtown areas of Beijing and Xi'an is fully electrified.

After five years, it said its team in China has expanded the fleet to more cities including Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou.

"We've been ahead of the game in rolling out electric vehicles in Asia, but it also meant that we needed to learn on the job," said Larry Wei, UPS automotive fleet manager who, with his team, was asked to bring electric vehicles to UPS' China operations.

Wei's team started with just two electric vehicles (EVs) in 2017.

"A lot of research, testing, and evaluation were required," he said. Adding that UPS' team in China also had taken safety and compliance into consideration when setting up the charging infrastructure.

UPS is working to drive investments that include electric ground vehicles and climate-conscious facilities as the American logistics giant seeks to reach 100% carbon neutrality by 2050.

It also wants to run on 40% alternate fuel in ground operations by 2025.

"Our EV fleet drives over a million kilometers a year, making a huge difference in our overall carbon footprint," UPS said, adding that in addition to the EV fleet, the team uses environmentally friendly packaging and smart energy, the process where smart devices are used for energy efficiency
