PORT OF LA NOVEMBER CARGO INCREASES 19% YEAR-ON-YEAR
December 13, 2023

For the fourth consecutive month, Port of Los Angeles (Port of LA) cargo volume increased year-on-year in November.

North America's busiest port processed 763,262 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) last month, a 19% improvement compared to last year.

"Our year-end growth reflects the strength of the US economy powered by the American consumer," said Gene Seroka, executive director at the Port of LA.

"Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales were strong, and the forecast for overall holiday sales is 3 to 4% above last year, another high mark," he added.

Seroka also pointed out that the port has gained market share in recent months — getting back some of the volumes that have moved to ports on the US East Coast during contract negotiations and some port congestion on the US West Coast.

"We'll continue those efforts into 2024 as we work toward maximizing our operational efficiencies and decarbonizing our port complex," Seroka added.

Port of LA — also tagged as the busiest seaport in the Western Hemisphere — processed 725,775 TEUs of cargo in October, a 7% improvement compared to last year.

In September, the port handled 748,440 TEUs, which was also up 5.4% year-on-year.
