ZIM has surpassed Yang Ming to become the world's ninth-largest container carrier in terms of operated container ship capacity.

According to the analyst firm Linerlytica, the delivery of ZIM Mount Vision, which is the 10th ship in a series of 15,248 TEU vessels chartered from Seaspan, has enabled ZIM to surpass Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming in terms of capacity.

As a result, ZIM has now taken the ninth spot in the list of largest shipping companies in terms of capacity.

The series of 10 new builds from Samsung Heavy Industries lifted ZIM's operated fleet capacity to 714,000 TEU, and the NYSE-listed is poised to continue growing.

"ZIM has more than doubled its size since 2020, growing by 155% over the past four years. Its operated fleet will be further bolstered by the delivery of 19 more new ships scheduled before the end of this year," Linerlytica said.

Yang Ming started 2020 as the world's eighth-largest container line, but conservative fleet growth saw it being undertaken first by HMM and then ZIM.

Alphaliner said HMM is currently the world's eighth-largest container line with a capacity of 799,919 TEUs.
