HONG KONG AIR CARGO EYES BOOMING SEAFOOD MARKET WITH NEW OSLO SERVICE
August 8, 2024

Hong Kong Air Cargo is launching a new service to capitalise on the booming seafood market between Asia and Norway, the biggest fishing nation in Europe.

The Hong Kong-based all-cargo airline will start a weekly flight between Hong Kong and Oslo Airport on September 4, utilising its Airbus A330-200 freighter fleet. This marks an important step in strengthening trade and transportation between Norway and Asia.

"We are very pleased to welcome Hong Kong Air Cargo to Oslo Airport," said Eva Beate Lande, cargo director at Oslo Airport operator Avinor.

"This route provides Norwegian exporters, especially in the fisheries sector, with a fast and reliable transport route to Asia, enhancing our competitiveness in the global market."

Norwegian-farmed Atlantic salmon accounts for over half of the world's salmon supply.

The airport operator noted that the new connection to one of the world's largest economic hubs gives Norwegian exporters access to new markets.

"This will contribute to increased trade and the strengthening of economic ties between Norway and Asia. For businesses in the fisheries sector, it means a more efficient and faster route to Asian markets, which can improve the quality of products upon arrival," it added.

The new cargo route will help diversify Oslo Airport's offerings.

"This provides increased stability and reduces vulnerability to market changes. With more transport options, Norwegian companies are better equipped to meet global challenges," the airport said.

Hong Kong Air Cargo, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong Airlines Limited, has been expanding its international network to capitalise on the ongoing e-commerce boom.

The freight carrier started a new intercontinental e-commerce route to London Stansted on February 4 this year, its first UK service. On February 11, it launched an e-commerce route connecting Hong Kong and Liege.

Hong Kong Air Cargo also began a new e-commerce air freight route between Hong Kong and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in March.

In December last year, the all-cargo airline launched its first intercontinental route to the Middle East, connecting Hong Kong and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, an important node of the country's "Belt and Road" initiative.
