ONTARIO AIRPORT HIT BY LOWER CARGO VOLUMES IN SEPTEMBER

Ontario International Airport (ONT) reported another month of cargo decline in September, reflecting a global slowdown in air freight volumes.

ONT said commercial cargo shipments decreased 16% in September and 12% on a year-to-date basis, reflecting a trend of lower cargo volumes at US airports.

Shipments of commercial freight and mail totalled 58,357 tons last month, compared to the 70,051 tons recorded during the same month in 2022.

It is also lower month-on-month than the 62,447 tons recorded in August.

September's air cargo performance, however, is higher than the 56,359 tons recorded in July and the 61,670 tons in JuneIn May, air cargo tonnage reached 61,000 tons.

Meanwhile, year-to-date (YTD) air cargo volumes totalled 543,318 tons in September 2023, lower than the 618,691 tons recorded during the same nine-month period in 2022.

"While global economic forces continue to impact cargo volumes at US airports, our shipping partners can count on our first-rate cargo facilities when cargo shipments return to historical levels," said Atif Elkadi, chief executive officer of Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA).
